“Skin” is a raw, emotional reaction born out of the events that took place in Ferguson last August, when I was still living in my hometown, St. Louis. It is…
…an attempt to make sense of a long, convoluted and messy history of racial injustice and oppression.
…an admittance that I’ve played a role in this history and the prolonging of oppression.
…a grieving over the evil and heinous nature within humanity.
…a genuine longing for new eyes, new lenses, new abilities to view others as our Creator views them and as I view myself.
…an honest cry for racial reconciliation.
…me no longer remaining silent.

LYRICS
You are a brother, you are a family
You are a stranger, you are an enemy
You are a daughter, you are a friend
You are valued, you are violent
I want to see through your eyes
I wanna borrow your mouth and speak
I want to hear what sounds reach your ear
I wanna feel the touches you hold dear
In the skin you’re in
You are a mother, you are a laborer
You are a lover, you are a hater
You are a liar, you are not infinite
You are a truth-seeker, you’re a hypocrite
Oooo, oooo, I am too, I am too
I want to see through your eyes
I wanna borrow your mouth and speak
I want to hear what sounds reach your ear
I wanna feel the touches you hold dear
In the skin you’re in
We’re all wearing this skin, it’s so thick and yet so thin
Peel back the layers and reveal the ties
that bind us within
Divided by age-old sin, hoping for some kinda
healin,
we’re each looking through lenses
that are broken, that are broken
All precious souls, we are
All meat and bones, we are
More, more, we are
But I cannot see through your eyes
I cannot borrow your mouth and speak
I cannot hear what sounds reach your ear
I cannot feel the touches you hold dear
in the skin you’re in, in the skin I’m in,
oh the skin we’re in
Aren’t we more than skin?
